We just studied the Great Awakening in class. How much of an influence do you think evangelicals have on American politics today? Read this NY Times article and let us know your thoughts!

Wow! Ms. Rosenberg - the article is so long! I didn't finish it but I got the gist of what Kirkpatrick is trying to tell us.

Evangelicals actually have great impact upon American politics today. Religion was the fundamental basis of our country, for most people fled to America simply for religious freedom. However, it turned out that toleration of religion OTHER than the Puritan religion did not exist. In fact, one's soul was to be condemned to perdition if he/she committed a sin, which included same-sex relations. Today, the issues of abortion and same-sex marriage have brought upon great controversy, because the U.S. does not only consist of a population of Christians, but also populations of Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, et cetera. People of other religions do not follow the same "rules", and therefore, do not share the same values. Since the birth of the United States, all of the presidents have been white and most (if not all) have been religious, particularly Christian. As a result, abortion and same-sex marriages have caused an emergence of great debating. Not only those issues, but also the potential advancements in science have been inhibited simply because it goes against religion - stem cell research and cloning.

Kluz: Evangelical does have a ascendancy on American politics today. Through out the American history, religion is a debated contreversy that continues to evolve in todays society .America is known for its liberty and rights among the people, therefore early immigrates came to the Americas to practice their religious beliefs. Today, America is sourrounded by different religions with different religious beliefs. We consist of Muslim, Jews, Christians and etcs who concerns in abortion, same- sex marriages, evolution, homosexuality differ in their way of following their Gods words and the bible.
Many church priest today are against abortion and define it as "evil" and a anti- abortion protest against God. Politics is a mayor issue with more importance than religion. The people should have a voice for their commmunity, speak up for the poor neglected by the government, educational injustice, your voice can change your community. Religion can also go agaisnt those who believe in evolution.

Hmm...we can't speak for everyone because everyone has different values. We shouldn't say that politics is more important than religion since not everyone has the same belief. But I can see what you're saying, because the political world most definitely plays a role in society. Religion is a such big issue in the Middle East - people killing each other based on their beliefs! If you think about it, it sounds so ridiculous, but it's happening today! Religion is so powerful!
