American Wanderer ... Article from The New York Times "Week in Review" 8/24/08

Here's an article to get you to start thinking about United States History again:

This is an interesting article about Obama's "rootlessness" and how this relates to the American experience.

How does this connect to what we've studied last year about the building of the American nation and the people who were a part of it?

oh to be bored & read the class blog...

this connects to last year's topic immensely!
the people who built this great american nation were intent on leaving their roots behind in england, france, ireland, etc. because they were not proud of where they used to live or how their government would act. this reconnects to today's world considering whenever a family packs up and movies, its "always for the better", even if it means leaving behind a precious family member behind, which is essentially leaving behind a part of your "root." even for the thousands of immigrants who have migrated to this country in recent years, they have left their roots behind only in order to be at a greater loss because they are constantly moving around in america, as nomads would.
which coincidentally, the first people to arrive in america were nomads, constantly roaming around, not settling, all in search for food. once this nomadic period ended, they developed a community but created new identities for themselves, essentially losing their "roots" in europe.
losing your "roots" is essential in order to follow the american dream, the dream jay gastby followed and countless others.

P.S. we need to read some Ishmael this year.
